 beat the sneak

Sneak in or walk in burglaries, are a problem everywhere in the UK. The rate at which they occur varies from around three to five in every ten burglaries. Thieves simply gain access through unlocked doors and windows and in just a few seconds they help themselves to valuables such as your handbag, wallet, camera, mobile phone and any other easily portable item that they can get away with. All of these burglaries can so easily be prevented if householders would just remember to lock doors and windows, and avoid leaving valuables on display. It’s a devastating experience for victims who often lose irreplaceable or sentimental items

There is a likelihood that Burglars live in, or close to, the target area, and stolen goods tend to be small and easily transportable. From experience there is some evidence of under reporting of this type of offence due to embarrassment of the victim, and it is also believed that houses of multiple occupancy (more traffic) are more likely to be targeted.
We've used a female in the photograph on the left to emphasise the fact that the thief isn't always male, there are some very prolific female sneak thieves operating in every part of the country.

help yourself

Just a few seconds is all a sneak thief needs to open the door, lift your wallet, purse or car keys and disappear again.

Do you lock the door straight away when you return from the shops laden with bags?
Do you lock the door when you nip outside to the garage or shed?
If the answer is no – then you offer an open invitation to the sneak thief.

When you come in or are outside.
Lock your doors and secure your windows.
Don’t leave valuables by an open door
Don’t leave valuables in obvious locations, sneak thieves know where to look.
