Fortunately for the burglar, and unfortunately for us, it isn’t too difficult to break into many sheds and garages. Don’t make it easy for thief. We tend to think about the security of our homes or cars but often overlook the garage or shed, yet we keep a lot of valuables in there.

It’s surprising what we keep in these buildings, our bikes, the freezer, the booze from last Christmas!. It all adds up to easy pickings for the thief. Police usually see an increase in shed and garage break ins as Spring approaches, this trend continues toward the Summer. Burglars looking for new gardening equipment, wont buy it from the local store, they will target your shed and garage. There are simple precautions you can adopt to make it more difficult for the thief.

Follow our advice and beat the thief.

  • If you are having a garage built or have ordered a sectional one, ask yourself, do I really need a window or additional door? These are just other ways into the building.

  • When washing your car keep your garage door closed, don’t advertise your goods to passers by- out of sight out of mind!

  • Use permanent marking to postcode your valuables, you can engrave items or use one of the commercially available property marking kits.

  • Prickly bushes such as pyracanthus, roses, berberis or hawthorn can be an effective and environmentally friendly deterrent if under a window or around your perimeter. See a selection here.

  • Good lighting, low energy dusk to dawn lighting if you are overlooked and operated by a movement detector if you are not.

  • Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch, and encourage your community to look out for each other.

  • Use an additional good quality garage door lock. From around £50.00

  • Fasten your valuable items together and secure to the fabric of the building or into the floor.

  • Consider buying a stand alone shed or garage alarm from around £10.00

  • Note down a description of suspicious vehicles or characters
